Ex main switches for the safety of machines and people

Ex main switches are essential devices for safely switching machines on and off. They work well, for example, as service switches to quickly cut off the power supply before maintenance work is carried out. In the event of an emergency, they can also stop the machine, protecting people and equipment.

When the current is switched off, what is known as arcing can occur – a situation where, although the contacts are disconnected, current still jumps between them. This happens because the air between the contacts is “pierced” by the voltage and turns into a conductor. Such an arc can damage machine components or even pose a danger to humans.

This is why main circuit breakers are used. They contain protections that prevent dangerous voltage spikes and components for safe machine control. In this way, they protect both people and equipment, which is particularly important when the circuit breakers are located within hazardous areas.

Operation under load as a switch/disconnector

The device meets the requirements of use categories AC-3 and AC-23 according to IEC 60947-3, which means that it can safely disconnect electrical circuits under full load, as well as switch circuits with inrush current – e.g. when controlling squirrel-cage motors or loads of an inductive nature.

The use of an Ex main switch that meets these requirements eliminates the need for additional operating disconnects or isolation switches. As a result, the HARDO ATEX main switch functions as a main power disconnector, operating switch and safety element at the same time, resulting in simplified installation and increased system reliability.

Ex ATEX HARDO main switch – reliable safety in Ex zones

The HARDO main circuit breaker is a device designed to disconnect the power supply in installations operating in explosive atmospheres. It meets the requirements of the ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU and IECEx and enables an effective circuit interruption under load – in accordance with use categories AC-3 and AC-23 according to IEC 60947-3

In combination with automation systems it can act as a power status indicator

Not every installation is standard – so instead of being limited to off-the-shelf solutions, you can take advantage of a fully configurable main circuit breaker for use in hazardous areas. The device will be tailored exactly to your technical requirements, environmental conditions and project specifics. This gives you the confidence that the circuit breaker will do its job – reliably, safely and in compliance with the applicable standards – even in unusual or particularly demanding applications.

Main switch of the control cabinet in the hazardous area

The main switch is a key component of control systems that allows machines, equipment or entire production lines to be switched off quickly. Its unique feature is the large diameter of the knob. This allows easy manipulation even in difficult conditions, which is invaluable, especially when the user is wearing thick protective gloves. The large size of the knob not only makes it easier to operate, but also minimises the risk of error when reacting quickly to a hazard, which is key to ensuring maximum safety.

Ease of use: the large knob (10 cm diameter) makes it easy to operate the unit, even with thick work gloves, which is crucial in situations requiring a quick and safe power cut.

Elimination of chance: The rotating mechanism eliminates the risk of the Ex main switch being used accidentally.

Takes up more space: a larger dial can take up more space on the control panel, which can be a constraint in tight spaces.

Complex movement: the dial requires a complex movement, which can make it more difficult to activate in crisis situations.

Thanks to their high resistance to extreme temperatures, HARDO products and equipment are ideal for demanding industrial applications. Corrosion-resistant materials and high structural strength ensure long-term reliability and protection from harsh environments.

HARDO offers a wide range of industrial electrical equipment for hazardous areas, which can be configured according to customer requirements – from voltage selection to additional accessories. The modular design of our equipment allows it to be adapted to different applications, increasing its flexibility and efficiency.
