– EXAMPLES OF HARDO
Ex d HARDO enclosures: what benefits do they offer?
Ex d switchgear, Ex d control panels, Ex d junction boxes – no matter what type of solution you need, the HARDO fireproof enclosure gives you several key advantages:
Temperature management and high power operation
A significant, often overlooked challenge in the design of Ex d devices is the risk of components overheating inside the enclosure, resulting from both the heat they generate and the high ambient temperature. We carry out designs for systems with very high dissipated power (exceeding 500W) at ambient temperatures as high as +40°C, ensuring stable and safe operation of the devices even in demanding industrial conditions.
Design based on actual working conditions
We develop each solution based on an analysis of the actual operating conditions of the plant. Among other things, we take into account varying operating modes (e.g. depending on the time of day or year), simultaneous operation of heat-generating components and actual ambient temperatures. We design the layout of apparatus inside enclosures based on an analysis of the temperature distribution, so that thermally sensitive components operate within a safe range – even at maximum heat loads.
Certified cable entry and ATEX / IECEx compliance
An integral part of every project is the selection and calculation of certified cable penetrations, including barrier penetrations for power, control, Ethernet and fibre optic cables. This ensures full functional continuity of the system without compromising on explosion safety. We implement all solutions in compliance with the ATEX directive and IEC 60079 and IECEx standards.
Cost optimisation through Ex d and Ex e split
The design of the system and its division into Ex d and Ex e modules allows effective control of thermal management, limiting the load on individual enclosures and maintaining acceptable operating temperatures for components. At the same time, this approach makes it possible to optimise the cost of the overall solution by limiting the use of the more costly Ex d enclosures to only those parts of the system where it is technically justified.
Ex switchgear and panels d
Safe use of non-Ex components in potentially explosive atmospheres
We design and manufacture switchgear, control panels and junction boxes based on Ex d enclosures for use in hazardous areas (ATEX/IECEx). This solution is used wherever it is necessary to use electrical, control or display components that are not in ATEX or IECEx design.
In this way, we enable the safe use of industry standard components without the need for individual certification in accordance with the ATEX directive and/or IECEx standards.

Ex d enclosures: key information
What makes up an Ex d enclosure?
– body
– cover + inspection windows
– control / signalling / actuation elements
– glands
When and where is an Ex d enclosure used?
Ex d enclosures allow the use of industrial (non-Ex) components in the unit. In this way, switchgear and control panels which are not originally designed for Ex zones can be used in plants where there is a hazardous area. The application of this protection concept applies to a wide range of products.
Advantages of Ex d protection
– relatively low cost for typical solutions with small dimensions
– lower costs due to the possibility of using standard (non-Ex) equipment inside the enclosure
– sparking or hot components can be installed inside the unit
– high-powered equipment and non-standard components that are not available in Ex design can be accommodated
Ex protection limits d
– very high cost of purchasing medium and large sized enclosures
– limited number of enclosure sizes
– very high weight of the device, making it difficult to install and operate
– high susceptibility of the extinguishing gap to damage with no automatic notification of damage
– high cost of repairing the equipment (need to dismantle and send to the manufacturer)
– increased maintenance costs (close inspection required, especially of the extinguishing gap)
Ex d enclosures
Ex d enclosures, are made of cast aluminium or stainless steel. They are designed for applications in hazardous areas: 1, 2 (gases) and 21, 22 (dust). They are distinguished by their high resistance to the explosion pressure that can occur inside them. The Ex d enclosure makes it possible to build functionally complex power distribution, control and protection systems in explosive atmospheres without having to use Ex apparatus in its entirety. The enclosures are used in sectors such as the chemical, petrochemical and energy industries.
